On medical treatment, patients will receive an initial injury assessment to identify the degree and duration of the injury. For mild cases, patient may recover spontaneously. For severe cases, a surgical procedure is required. The surgical procedure will be done under general anaesthesia. After identifying the nerve, a surgeon will remove the damaged section and reconnect the cut ends. It is a minor surgery and takes one to two hours.
Surgery cannot restore the feeling and function of the injured nerve to 100% and only 70-80%. However, it would not have a significant impact on the daily life.
As the nerve injury may be permanent, patient should consult a doctor to check the distance between the operation site and nerve before the dental procedure such as wisdom tooth removal and dental implant. When needed, doctor may refer patient to specialist to avoid nerve injury.
