Disharmony of the jaws resulted from congenital or developmental reasons can be treated with orthognathic surgery. There are different types of jaw disharmony, which are related to the growth of both upper and lower jaws. For example, a “sunken” face could be resulted from an under-developed upper jaw or an over-developed lower jaw or both. In this type of deformity, orthognathic surgery involves repositioning of the upper jaws forward or the lower jaw backward and both if the two jaws are abnormally developed.
Orthognathic surgery not only can improve the facial profile, but also correct the abnormal bites. Allowing patient to regain self-confidence and resume normal chewing ability. Furthermore, all the surgical incisions are made inside the mouth, and hence there is no external scar.
